NEWS

24HR Art to host Shanghai delegates in February

In February, 24HR Art will be hosting a delegation from the Shanghai Zendai Museum of Modern Art as part of the Australia Council International Strategies program. Ms Binghui Huangfu (Deputy Director Shanghai Zendai MOMA), Mr Dai Zhikang (founder and president of Shanghai Zendai Investment Group), Mr Yang Ping (journalist and editor) and Professor Yang Liwei (journalists and social researcher) will visit Darwin and Alice Springs before travelling to Canberra where they will be hosted by the mob at Canberra Contemporary Art Space. Steve Eland (Director 24HR Art) has devised a full schedule of artist studio visits, meetings with arts industry workers and Government officials during the two weeks the delegates are in Australia. The last few years has seen a growing number of exhibitions and residencies at 24HR Art by contemporary Chinese artists and curators, but it was back in 1995, during the first few years of 24HR Art operations, when relations with China began. The then Director, Steve Fox, programmed a cultural exchange project with artists Zhou Hai Qing and Zhang Da Wo, the visiting artists toured the top end and facilitated calligraphy workshops during their stay.

Peter Walsh

Sadly, the new year brought with it the passing away of Melbourne artist Peter Walsh. Born in 1958, Peter had been to the NT a number of times, most recently in 2007 as a participating artist in the group exhibition Ôculture trackersÕ at 24HR Art. PeterÕs works were inspired by the NT landscape on a previous visit in 2006 to take part in the 24HR Art artist camp held at Gunbalanya, in Western Arnhem Land. Peter made many new friends in the NT, and he will be greatly missed.
