NEWS

Public presentation by curator Binghui Huangfu.
@24HR Art 5:30pm Wed 25 Feb
Trained as an artist, curator and theorist, Binghui Huangfu is an industry leader and one of the worldÕs leading curators of contemporary Asian art. Currently she is the Deputy Director of Shanghai Zendai Museum of Modern Art in China and the Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of NSW in Sydney and a Researcher for the project: Construction, Connection and Community: Measuring Asian Art's Contribution to Contemporary Culture at the Centre for Contemporary Art and Politics, College of Fine Art, University of NSW in Sydney.
Binghui was a co-curator for the Gwangju Biennale 2006 entitled: ÒFever Variations – Trace RootsÓ in Gwangju, Korea. She was the Director of Asia Australia Art Centre/Gallery 4A (2003 to 2006) and the Director /Curator of the Earl Lu Gallery (now called: The Institute of Contemporary Art Singapore), LASALLE-SIA College of the Arts, Singapore (1996 to 2003), where she curated a number of major international exhibitions, accompanied by conferences and substantial catalogues, essaying themes underpinning the current study. In particular, Site + Sight - Translating Cultures (2002) explored the impact of globalisation and ÔtransnationalÕ culture. Binghui is one the pioneers of contemporary Chinese art curating. Her exhibition In and Out (1997) brought together mainland and diasporic artwork, and travelled to 7 cities in Australia and 2 cities in China.
A consistent feature of BinghuiÕs curatorial research has been its focus on the cultural politics of diaspora.
Text & Subtext (2000), which travelled to 7 countries, was a groundbreaking presentation of Asian women's contemporary art from around the world, the catalogue from which continues to sell and be cited worldwide. In 2004 Binghui curated an ambitious multiphase exhibition Asian Traffic which travelled to six cities and three countries in Asia, followed up with Open Letter at 4A in 2005 which travelled to four South East Asia countries. Both these projects explore the possibility of transnational and intercultural dialogue through art.
In 2002 Binghui was the keynote speaker at the Guangzhou Triennial conference: ÒPlace and Model, Rethinking and Reinventing Contemporary Art ExhibitionsÓ; in 2003 she presented a keynote at the ÒContemporary Asian Art ForumÓ, Hong Kong, and was also invited to speak at the Danish Centre for Cultural Development, and the Asian Women's Art conference in Stockholm. In 2005 she was invited to present the keynote at the conference ÒArtistic Practice in the Third SpaceÓ in Shenzhen.  In 2006 Binghui was the keynote speaker at the ÒMuseum Australia National Conference 2006Ó Brisbane on the topic of ÒArt Community and Culture IntersectionsÓ. In Oct 2006 Binghui was a keynote speaker for the symposium, which was co-organised by the Singapore Economic Development Board and Singapore Art Museum on the topic of ÒArt Biennale in AsiaÓ.  Research for these papers directly feeds into the current project ÒAsian AttitudesÓ which will be opened at the National Museum of Poland in Pozann, Poland in July 2007.  Binghui has published widely in art journals, and recently co-edited ÒChina PhenomenonÓ, a special issue of the journal
Artlink.
