Zhou Xiaoping – Family Time
Zhou captures the daily life of an Aboriginal
community with great skills & sensitivity. His love & respect for the
people of Arnhem Land & the country itself is the result of many years of
visiting & is apparent in his lively rendering of the seemingly ordinary.
Lena Yarinkura & Bob Burruwal- Soft Sculptures
The charming soft sculptures of Lena
& Bob from Maningrida in Arnhem Land are beautifully crafted works, woven
& painted with great care. From cheeky dogs to tales of seduction, these
pieces will make you smile if not laugh out loud.

Exhibition: to 28 August
Lloyd Kwilla and Claude Carter- In August Red Rock
Gallery is presenting a joint exhibition of Lloyd Kwilla and Claude Carter's
work at the Darwin Visual Arts Association, in conjunction with the Darwin
Festival and Telstra Awards. Their paintings can also be viewed at the gallery
in Kununurra, where they hang alongside diverse ochre works by other
established East Kimberley artists.
For almost four decades the East Kimberley and adjacent desert
regions of north-western Australia have yielded a rich seam of contemporary
Aboriginal art. Renowned artists such as Rover Thomas, Queenie McKenzie and
Billy Thomas drew inspiration from their traditional country and culture to
paint powerful works which garnered respect from their own people as well as
the Australian and international art communities. The potency of their artistic
and cultural legacy ensured that another generation of younger Aboriginal
artists also have the opportunity to explore their creative potential. 56 Woods St, Darwin T; 89819351 E: info@dvaa.net.au

Call for Arts/ Crafts people in Darwin
A photographic
project by Tom Dinning
ÒOver the next 12 months I will be embarking on a project to
record, in photographs, the work of artists and crafts people of the Top End.
The aim of this project is to record the work of our artists and crafts people
and highlight their work in a book, website and exhibition. The book will
include a selection of these people, their work and life in the Top End. The
website will be more comprehensive and will provide an ongoing resource for
people wishing to view the quality work produced by our creative and skilled
artists and crafts people. It is also hoped that an exhibition of the project
can be held during 2011. I would foresee this as being an excellent opportunity
for the art/craft community to share in the completed task. I am asking for the
cooperation of people who would like to be included in this project. I would
need a few hours of your time over the next 12 month to subject you to a photo
shoot and interview. It is preferred that this takes place at the location
where you work as the images I am seeking would illustrate how and where you
work as well as the art/craft work you produce. Those people who are interested
in participating can contact me on mobile 0417839582 or email christom.dinning@bigpond.com Ò

THE SOUTH PROJECT
- CALL OUT FOR PARTICIPATION
Closing date for responses: 20 August
The South Project is a network of arts and crafts practitioners,
arts workers, writers, thinkers and others interested in culture in the
southern hemisphere. In 2010, The South Project invites its network to respond
to the following question: How does a network activate a public? How can
individuals undertake their practice in the public sphere as part of a network,
at a distance from their physical location? What aspect of your practice or
what type of project is interesting to imagine producing elsewhere, remotely?
How can a network facilitate culture in public, and with the public? The South
Project is interested to hear your thoughts on how you do, or could imagine,
working from your home to practice elsewhere as part of a global network. We
invite speculation, utopian dreams and ideas that are realisable through the
conduit of a network. We propose to circulate all initial responses via our
website with the possibility that some of these ideas might be activated, with
your involvement, within the physical public space of Melbourne in late 2010.
Email to: info@southproject.org
Please note, responses should be no longer than 500 words in length and, if
appropriate, include an image.
